Hi, I'm Shelley

Welcome to Rocking the Playroom!

Here you'll find songs for babies, toddlers and preschoolers that you can sing whenever you feel like it.

There are also more structured Playschool Activities that parents or teachers could do as a playtime activity.

And finally, there are the Playschool Lessons, which group a few Playschool Activities together and follow the themes that the kids are doing at my local playschool.

Lesson: Autumn Rustle

Lesson: Autumn Rustle

Every week, I share a music lesson I've done with the kids at playschool. Parents can do these lessons at home as a fun musical activity, and preschool/playschool teachers can use them for their music rings.

This week, we'll do our lesson outside in amongst the falling autumn leaves, because the children are learning all about this beautiful season!

Welcome Song

Sing the Rocking the Playroom Welcome Song.

Rhythm: My shaker is a phone

Shaking is not the only thing you can do with a shaker! It can be a phone, a microphone, a falling autumn leaf... Let's see how many more creative ideas the kids can come up with!

We'll sing this song (to the tune of "A Hunting We Will Go" as we shake (or vacuum, or stir...):

My shaker is a phone,
my shaker is a phone
It's anything I want it to be,
my shaker is a phone

This is another great activity from Shake, Rattle and Roll.

Singing/Movement: Here we go round the mulberry bush

Sing "Here we go round the mulberry bush" with some adjusted lyrics to fit in with our parachute and autumn theme. For the first verse, walk to the left. Repeat the verse and then circle to the right. Then sing the next verses while doing the actions.

Here we go round the mulberry bush
The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a chilly autumn morning

  • This is the way the sun comes up [slowly lift the parachute as high as the children can reach - do this for the duration of the first two lines, then repeat for the second two lines]
  • This is the way the leaves fall down [slowly lower the parachute to about knee level - do this for the duration of the first two lines, then repeat for the second two lines]
  • This is the way we rake the leaves [make a raking/rowing motion into the parachute]
  • This is the way the cold wind blows [shake the parachute up and down]
  • This is the way we hibernate [children lie down under the parachute while the adults gently move the parachute above the children]

Autumn Leaves Parachute Activity

I must admit I've been working hard on this activity, so I'm hoping the kids enjoy it. It's the subject of this separate blog post, and we have done a recording of the song for you!

Dance: This is Amazing Grace

This is a song that focuses on the Christian Easter message. We'll do some free dance to the Bethel Kids version of This is Amazing Grace, and then later, we'll see if the kids would like to learn how to sing it themselves.
