Hi, I'm Shelley

Welcome to Rocking the Playroom!

Here you'll find songs for babies, toddlers and preschoolers that you can sing whenever you feel like it.

There are also more structured Playschool Activities that parents or teachers could do as a playtime activity.

And finally, there are the Playschool Lessons, which group a few Playschool Activities together and follow the themes that the kids are doing at my local playschool.

Parachute Shapes

Parachute Shapes

Learning to recognise different shapes is an important part of early mathematical knowledge. We did a music lesson that was all about shapes last week, and we sang our "Tap Tap Shapes" song. In this activity, we're going to continue our "shapes" theme, but we're going to learn with BIGGER shapes - in the form of different parachutes.

Use a circular parachute with colored segments. My mom-in-law made me such an awesome parachute - it's made up of 6 segments, each in a different colour of quantec material. For the rectangular parachute, I'll just use a three-quarter bed sheet, and for the square one, I'll use a square table cloth.

Get the children to hold the parachute. Point out that the parachute is a big circle and they are all holding on to the edge of the circle. Get them to practise walking to the left while holding the parachute.

Then point out that the parachute is made up of different coloured triangles (technically these are actually called segments, but besides the curved third side, they are close enough to triangles for our purposes!). Get them to practise doing tiny shakes up and down, making waves on the parachute. Then sing the following verse while walking to the left (repeat a few times to help the children get to know the song):

Let's all make a circle
A circle a circle
Let's all make a circle
And walk to the left
There are no corners
Just one side around it
Let's all make a circle
and walk all around

Point out the triangles on the parachute and explain that they each are holding a triangle of a different colour. Then sing the following verse while shaking up and down gently (repeat a few times):

Let's all hold a triangle
Triangle triangle
Let's all hold together
And shake up and down
There's one side, and two sides
And three sides, that's all sides
Let's all hold a triangle
Shake up and down

Change the parachute to a square tablecloth. Sing the following verse while walking to the right (repeat a few times):

Let's all make a square now
a square now a square now
Let's all make a square now
And walk to the right
All of the 4 sides
Exactly the same
Let's all make a square now
And walk all around

Change the parachute to a rectangular sheet or tablecloth and sing the following verse (repeat a few times).

Let's all make a rectangle
Rectangle rectangle
1, 2 3 and lift it
Now slowly float down
A long side a short side
A long side a short side
Let's all make a rectangle
Lift up and down
